Iona Presbyterian Church, 38 Donovan Street, Blockhouse Bay, Auckland 0600, New Zealand
Sunday services are at 10.00 am and 7.00 pm
Iona is the Blockhouse Bay parish of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand and is governed by the rules of that church.
Iona was established in 1958 in what was then a new housing development. It is a fully self-supporting parish and additionally gives funds each year to both local and overseas causes as part of its mission outreach.
Our name comes from the Isle of Iona off the west coast of Scotland. Iona's fame began in 563 AD when Columba, with thirteen followers, landed at what is now known as St Columa's Bay to establish a monastery. The current Iona Community was founded in 1938 by George MacLeod, minister, visionary and prophetic witness for peace, in the context of the poverty and despair of the Depression.
Our logo, pictured on the left, features:
• A ship theme which is appropriate for our seaside location
• The mast is also the cross, and is in our traditional Celtic style
• The wind filled sail reminds us of the fullness of life we have in Christ
• The group of different sized people shows that we are a church family
• The different coloured people indicate that we are all different and highlight the multi-racial
aspect of our parish
• And the ship gathers us all around the cross, as we travel together on our journey of faith
Our strengths include our warm welcome, strong congregational singing, and the harmony of the congregation as a people of faith encompassing those of many different nationalities and Christian denominations
